Toronto, January 4, 2019 – Vivariant Laboratories Inc. – (the “Company” or “Vivariant”) is pleased to announce it has received its Containment Level II Pathogen and Toxin License from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Under the guidance of our Chief Microbiologist, Anand Thota, Vivariant has successfully received its Containment Level II Pathogen and Toxin License from the Public Health Agency of Canada.
“Smoking Cannabis with a high microbial load can pose a serious risk to health which makes testing for microbes and pathogens essential to protecting consumers and patients,” Anand said. As such, Health Canada requires cannabis license holders to “test cannabis to ensure it is within generally accepted tolerance limits for herbal medicines for human consumption, as established in any publication referred to in Schedule B of the Food and Drugs Act.”
“In order to test products like Cannabis for microbes, we need to maintain cultures of certain organisms like salmonella, E. coli and Staph aureus, among others, as positive controls.” President Thomas Fraleigh said, “A laboratory needs to be biosafety certified by Health Canada before it can source bacterial cultures and conduct these operations. This license is a necessary box to check on our path towards commercial operations.”
Vivariant is Analytical Testing applicant #APP-SW4YAAJRQF-2018 and is headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario. In advance of licensing, Vivariant does not yet handle Cannabis on site.
